Motor Rally Event Services
Gumball 3000 – 2023
CREXCELL supplies Rally event support services for the Gumball Rally.
Gumball 3000 was founded in 1999 by British entrepreneur Maximillion Cooper. It is an annual 3,000-mile international celebrity motor rally which takes place on public roads.
Max’s vision was to combine cars, music, fashion and entertainment.
Thousands of supercars have entered this epic journey all across the globe, touching down on every continent

2023 saw the event take place across Europe starting with the flag drop for 100 cars in Edinburgh on 10/11 June.
The cars would then travel through London, Amsterdam, The Swiss Alps, Venice, Budapest then to a finish in Porto Montenegro on 16/17 June.
CREXCELL’s engagement
Gumball 3000 appointed CREXCELL to provide event support services for the two days start event. These services included stewarding, security, crowd, and traffic management, including the creation of both written and graphic plans.
Event days
Day one – CREXCELL provide a stewarding deployment for a static car display in George Street with an overnight security detail.

On day two, the rally will commence as each car, in turn, receives the flag drop to guide them on their way out of Edinburgh.
CREXCELL provided stewarding and crowd management services on the day and have assisted Gumball 3000 with the provision of local first aid services.
The display attracted over 20,000 spectators over the day with the flag drop attracting around 30,000 spectators over the day.
CREXCELL erected over 2000 meters of barriers to separate spectators from vehicles on these days.
They also managed bus gates, pedestrian crossing points, event and emergency vehicle movement etc., as well as providing trained traffic management operatives to assist traffic flow on the live roads around the event site.
Client objectives and challenge
Gumball 3000 had a few objectives relating to the Edinburgh event, but they importantly included the provision of a safe environment for staff, participants and spectators while allowing an enjoyable experience for all, hence the reason for appointing CREXCELL to assist in this.
Another important objective for Gumball was in obtaining the correct permissions and licenses for the event.
Gumball 3000 requested CREXCELL to attend the Council’s Regulatory Committee Licensing Sub-Committee in support of the event organisers.
The Safety Services Manager, John McNeill, and the Technical and Operations Director, Scott Findlay, a director at CREXCELL, were there to represent the company.
The experienced representatives from CREXCELL actively participated in the Committee process. Attending the Committee gave elected council members the chance to directly question the organisers, who, in turn, had the opportunity to address the Committee members directly regarding the benefits of the event to the City of Edinburgh.
The process and result
The case for the event was first presented as an overview by Maximillion Cooper, CEO Gumball 3000, then supported by Ella Clayton, Event Co-Ordinator, Gumball 3000. Ella also explained that CREXCELL had been included in the organisational set up due to their vast experience of events in Edinburgh and knowledge of the City itself, which they hoped would help allay any fears the Committee may harbor.
The Committee of elected members of Edinburgh City Council were then offered the opportunity to ask questions of the organisers and CREXCELL, questions were numerous ranging from occupancy capacity, numbers expected to attend, traffic management, the nature of the event (rally, NOT race) and the City’s experience of two previous Gumball events.
The responses to the questions seemed to be well received and fears of traffic and spectator congestion were lessened. The Committee then moved to grant the Public Entertainment License that had been applied for, and to produce an Order giving permission for the parade phase of the event (flag drop and drive off) to take place in George Street and the local environment, a very positive result!
